Quick Answer

Can Ayurveda help IBS and acidity?

Ayurveda treats acidity, bloating and IBS as problems of Agni, the digestive fire. Sharp Agni tends to cause acidity, slow Agni causes heaviness and bloating, and irregular Agni causes IBS. Treatment matches herbs, diet, meal timing and stress care to your pattern, so digestion settles over time instead of only being suppressed.

Acidity after every meal. A stomach that bloats by evening. Loose motions one week and constipation the next. Digestive problems are some of the most common reasons people visit our clinic - and some of the most frustrating, because the reports often come back "normal".

Antacids and acid-reducing tablets can calm the burning, but they do not answer the question of why digestion went wrong. Many people take them for years.

Ayurveda looks at digestion through Agni - your digestive fire. When it burns too sharp, you get acidity and burning. When it is slow, you get heaviness, bloating and sluggishness. When it is irregular, you get the unpredictable pattern of IBS. Treatment depends on which one is yours.

Our Treatment Approach

How We Treat IBS, Acidity & Digestion

Finding Your Pattern

Dr. Abrol works out whether your Agni is sharp (acidity), slow (bloating) or irregular (IBS) - because the right treatment for one can worsen another.

Herbal Medicines

Cooling herbs for acidity, warming digestive herbs for slow digestion, and grounding herbs for IBS - chosen for your body type.

Meal Timing and Diet

Regular meal times, a light early dinner, and foods matched to your pattern. Often this makes the biggest difference.

Panchakarma When Needed

For long-standing problems, Dr. Abrol may advise a Panchakarma programme - for example Virechana for Pitta-type acidity or Vasti for Vata-type IBS.

Calming the Gut-Mind Link

Stress directly upsets digestion. Breathing practice, sleep routine and therapies such as Shirodhara help when stress is a trigger.

Simple Habits That Help Digestion

  • Eat at roughly the same times every day, and do not skip meals
  • Keep dinner light and at least 2-3 hours before bed
  • Chew a pinch of fennel (saunf) after meals
  • Sit in Vajrasana for 5-10 minutes after eating, if your knees allow
  • Avoid very spicy, fried and packaged food, and too much tea or coffee on an empty stomach
  • Do not stop prescribed acid tablets suddenly - acidity can rebound. Reduce them only with your doctor.

Warning Signs to Check With a Doctor

These are not usual IBS or acidity symptoms. See a doctor or gastroenterologist promptly if you have:

  • Blood in the stool, or black, tarry stools
  • Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
  • Weight loss without trying
  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Symptoms that started after the age of 50, or that wake you up at night
  • Anaemia, or a family history of bowel cancer

Common Questions

IBS, Acidity & Digestion - Frequently Asked Questions

IBS is a long-term condition, and no honest doctor can promise a permanent cure. Ayurveda aims to settle your digestion so that flare-ups become less frequent and milder, using herbs, diet, meal timing and stress care matched to your pattern.

Not suddenly. Stopping acid-reducing tablets abruptly can cause rebound acidity. As digestion improves, any reduction should be planned with your doctor.

Fresh, thin buttermilk (takra) with roasted cumin is a classical Ayurvedic food for irregular digestion and loose motions. It is not right for everyone, so ask Dr. Abrol whether it suits your pattern.

Timing, stress, eating late, long gaps between meals and very spicy or sour food can all cause acidity, even with a healthy diet. Ayurveda looks at how and when you eat, not just what.

Yes. Digestive problems are well suited to online consultation - diet, routine and herbal medicines can all be planned remotely, and your first call is free.
