About Dr. Abrol

Sciatica often starts as a small twinge in the lower back before developing into sharp pain that shoots down the leg, making it hard to sit, stand, or walk. Ayurveda calls this Gridhrasi - a condition rooted in Vata dosha imbalance. Vata governs all movement in the body, and when it goes out of balance, the nerves and muscles along the sciatic nerve's path suffer.

The sciatic nerve is long and thick, running from the lower back through the hips and down both legs - when something pinches or irritates it, sharp pain radiates along its entire path. Common triggers include a slipped disc pressing on the nerve root, a tight piriformis muscle, spinal wear, poor sitting posture, long desk hours, and sudden heavy lifting or twisting. Skipped meals, a sedentary lifestyle, constant stress, cold weather, and cold food and drink all aggravate Vata and worsen symptoms.
