Quick Answer

Can Ayurveda help with thyroid problems?

Ayurveda can support people with hypothyroidism by improving digestion and metabolism (Agni), balancing Kapha and Vata, and addressing stress and sleep. Many patients feel less tired and heavy. It is taken alongside prescribed thyroxine - never as a replacement - and any change in thyroid medicine dose is made only by your doctor based on blood tests.

An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) slows the whole body down. You feel tired even after sleeping, put on weight without eating more, feel cold when others do not, and notice hair fall, dry skin, constipation or heavier periods. It is especially common in women.

Many patients tell us the same story: "My report says normal, but I still feel exhausted." A thyroid tablet corrects the hormone number, but it does not always fix the tiredness, digestion and low mood that come with it.

Ayurveda has no separate word for the thyroid, but it describes this picture well - a slowed digestive and metabolic fire (Agni), heaviness from Kapha, and dryness and anxiety from Vata. Treatment works on these, alongside the thyroxine you already take.

Is This Right For You?

Who Is This For?

  • People with hypothyroidism who still feel tired on thyroxine
  • Women with thyroid problems plus weight gain, hair fall or irregular periods
  • Those with borderline thyroid reports and clear symptoms
  • Patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (positive anti-TPO) looking for supportive care
Tests

Thyroid Tests to Bring

TSH alone does not always show the full picture. If you have them, bring:

  • TSH, Free T4 and Free T3
  • Anti-TPO antibodies (for Hashimoto's thyroiditis)
  • Haemoglobin, vitamin D and vitamin B12 - low levels cause very similar tiredness
  • Any neck ultrasound report
Daily Habits

Practical Tips if You Take Thyroxine

  • Take your thyroid tablet on an empty stomach with plain water, 30–60 minutes before breakfast or tea
  • Keep a gap of at least 4 hours between thyroxine and calcium or iron tablets
  • Take Ayurvedic medicines at the times Dr. Abrol advises - not together with thyroxine
  • Eat warm, freshly cooked meals and keep dinner light and early
  • Walk or do yoga daily - movement helps sluggish metabolism
  • Recheck your thyroid blood test as your doctor advises and share it with both doctors

When to See a Doctor Urgently

See your doctor or endocrinologist promptly if you have:

  • A fast or irregular heartbeat, tremors, heat intolerance or sudden weight loss (signs of an overactive thyroid)
  • A neck lump that is growing, hard, or causing difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • A thyroid problem during pregnancy - dose changes are often needed quickly
  • Extreme drowsiness, confusion or feeling very cold

Common Questions

Thyroid - Frequently Asked Questions

No honest doctor can promise that. Ayurveda aims to improve your symptoms, digestion and energy, and to support your thyroid function. Many people feel much better, but any change to your thyroxine dose must be decided by your doctor based on blood tests.

No. Do not stop or reduce thyroxine on your own. Ayurvedic treatment is taken alongside it, and your blood tests guide any change in dose.

Tiredness can come from low iron, vitamin D or B12, poor sleep, stress, weak digestion, or a TSH that is "normal" but not ideal for you. Dr. Abrol looks at the whole picture, not just one number.

Warm, freshly cooked, simple meals with plenty of vegetables and whole grains, and less fried, heavy and packaged food. Use iodised salt unless your doctor has told you otherwise. Your exact diet depends on your body type.

Yes. Thyroid care suits online consultation well - you share your reports, have a video consultation, and follow-ups track both your symptoms and your blood tests. Your first call is free.
