About Dr. Abrol

Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas or myomas) are benign tumours composed of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue, found in the middle layer or on the surface of the uterine wall. They vary greatly in size, and a woman may have just one or several. Fibroids are symptomless most of the time, but depending on size, number, and location, they can cause heavy or prolonged bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, and in some cases fertility and pregnancy-related issues.

In Ayurveda, fibroids are described as 'Granthi' (Garbhashaya Granthi) - an encapsulated growth attributed to an aggravated Kapha, with possible involvement of Vata and Pitta.

Common Questions

Uterine Fibroids - Frequently Asked Questions

No. Fibroids are benign tumours, and it is very rare for them to turn cancerous.

Ayurveda takes a comprehensive approach - balancing excess Kapha, restoring Vata, correcting digestive (Agni) issues, and eliminating toxins (Ama) - rather than treating symptoms alone.

Not necessarily. Small, asymptomatic fibroids may simply be monitored, with Ayurvedic therapies used to help prevent further growth.

Duration varies by size, number, and symptoms - visible changes are usually seen within 6–12 weeks, with total treatment taking several months.

Good eating habits, a healthy body weight, gentle regular exercise or yoga, good sleep, stress management, and regular gynaecological check-ups.
